A TALK WITH SMIRNENSKI

By Yasen Vedrin
(The Bulgarian Chronicles -
Chronicles of the Poets)

Many guests I have met in this long life and place,
Only yellow I missed, poet friend!
I would sleep under bridges, on benches in space...
And from mournful dreams glow till the end.

Many stairs I have climbed. All in unequal fights.
Someone malicious tripped me with a noose.
And I taught my own heart to mourn bleeding in nights,
But fearless of grave winds let loose.

Many brothers I warmed of poor Gavroche’s line
And built barricades for them out of my verse.
And this world — this dark world, like a night in design,
I conquered with bonfires ablaze and diverse.

Many cups I have drained with a gas-stove coffee,
But the absinthe I strictly refused to partake.
That old devil, it seems, caught a rage and a plea
And spat out a storm for my sake.

Many pale, fragile youths wept their tears into me
From the soulless and loud howl of Mammon today.
Yet I yearned and created — inspired, flying free,
Even on the sharp nail in my way.

Much faith I have gathered with horses in flight.
And I sharpened my quill into shrapnel and steel.
If the worst ones had robbed me of all in their night —
Nothing holy could they ever steal.

Many roads I have roamed. In much fire I burned.
And I found a sweet spell in the myrrh and its grace.
To remain within it — as a sin offering turned.
Crucified with the Savior, till the end of the race.

DEDICATED TO VASIL LEVSKI!

By Yasen Vedrin
(The Bulgarian Chronicles -
Chronicles of the Apostle)

You arrive within my night-long sighing,
As a bright angel and a midnight guest,
To remind somehow of sharp thorns, prying,
In the head of Jesus deeply pressed.

I would never ask how simple-hearted
Is to bring a heart to altars, warm,
And to glow where all the light departed,
As a waxen candle in the storm.

How to bear the sorrows of the broken?
How to gather nations in one chest?
How to keep the sacred words, unspoken,
If the soul by heavy yokes is pressed?

If in here, within our narrow spaces,
Words are not enough for dawn to rise…
And inside the lamp, in quiet traces,
Even the last dying spark now dies.

I have thrown my cassock off, Ignatius!
With my faith I go on sowing seeds.
This is my occupation, holy, spacious,
In this shaken country of my deeds.

We have had enough of slavish stalling.
Long enough have ropes bound soul and head.
They are twisting gallows for our falling,
Worms, unpatriotic, by lies fed.

Stay for me a lantern’s glowing, gleaming,
So that someone in their dark can see.
For though on the gallows hanging, streaming —
The one who is living, dead can never be...

AN ARIA BY LUCIANO

By Yasen Vedrin
(The Bulgarian Chronicles -
Chronicles of the Poverty)

Our life is triumphant. Just like an aria,
Perchance sung by great Luciano, so high.
They open today a free soup cafeteria
For people whose fates were crushed down to die.

Rejoice, O my nation! Alive by definition.
With warm, little soup oil your strings for a treat.
So that the poor man, near his deathly condition,
Can drag out one more day of life on the street.

Let little bright flashes float over the eyes now,
From meat with hot broth and a handful of peas.
Great mercy — all meant for the paupers to rise now!
And bounty — all meant for their hunger to ease!

To stop for a moment the agonizing rumbling
With one single lunch, surely sent by Christ's hand.
And within this dark, joyless, and miserable stumbling
The hunger won't be a grim question in land.

What of it, if those who are full have amassed now
The surpluses piled like a mountain ahead?
The wonderful, marvelous event has just passed now —
The state has released a few portions of bread.

A comfort for people so broken by sorrow.
A free soup kitchen. A tasty design.
It seems the Great Worker of Miracles tomorrow
Arrived from white clouds of Mount Zion, divine.

And Paradise pours over Bulgaria's traces.
For poor folks the herald sounds trumpets on high...
Our life is triumphant. Just like an aria,
Perchance sung by great Luciano, so high.

POWER AS DORIAN GRAY

By Yasen Vedrin
(The Bulgarian Chronicles -
Chronicles of the Fall)

With respect and reverence to Oscar Wilde!

The power hasn't read a poet's line!
In rhymes it doesn't read a single thing!
Just hand it roses, confetti, and design,
So in its greed and appetite it can spring!

The power, sadly, doesn't hear the groan.
It listens out for hymns and altars high.
From people's pain it heals itself alone —
By bowing down to Mammon with a sigh.

The power doesn't want the heavy weight.
It is enough of a burden on its own.
When pressed into a corner, filled with hate,
With measured lies it slips away, unknown.

The power eats and never has its fill.
With vacuum force it sucks up every cent.
It leaves behind charred ashes on the hill,
Yet keeps its luxury, completely well content.

The power is like stone, heartless and cold.
A Medusa — turning every life to clay.
Unstable, distant, impossible to hold.
Guilty... With no one convicted to this day.

The power is a chasm. Into hell it sinks.
A cruel portrait of some glossy Gray...
And even if it tells you youth it drinks,
Do not accept it ever... Turn away!

THE FEAST OF FREEDOM!

By Yasen Vedrin
(The Bulgarian Chronicles -
Chronicles of the Holidays)

Freedom is Faith, without chains, flesh, or fright!
Freedom is Truth on the Heavenly Way of light!
Freedom is Honor for blood poured in the past!
Freedom is Courage, like a lion, built to last!

Freedom is Flight, with no rope and no yoke!
Freedom is a Bird where the high skies awoke!
Freedom is Will, with no dungeon walls around!
Freedom is Joy where cloudless days are found!

Freedom is a Banner of the dead in Covenant high!
Freedom is a Flame, the most sublime in the sky!
Freedom is the Gift to the slave of centuries old!
Freedom is a Crown on the bright grave, untold!

Freedom is Memory, standing firm in granite stone!
Freedom is a Song that our blest spirit has known!
Freedom is the Meaning for a life built to grace!
May the Lord protect it upon our own race!

THE DRAMA, EVERLASTING, PLAIN…

By Yasen Vedrin
(The Bulgarian Chronicles -
Chronicles of the Elections)

The people drown in hardships, lower,
And turn to beasts — both bare and cold,
When a malicious liar leads with power,
And not Christ Jesus, from of old.

And this same drama, everlasting, plain,
Will keep repeating every turn,
Because this world, in greed and gain,
To Holy Heaven will not yearn.

Platforms, oaths, and new creations
Flow down into the dirty drain,
And no life-shattering tribulations
Become an ideal through the pain.

The earthly thrones are distributed
By a long-fallen prince of night,
And he selects dry chaff, computed,
When offering power and its might.

And every crown that glitters brightly,
Or chair desired in this race,
Is given only when bowing lightly
Before supreme, dark Evil's face.

No earthly creature will erase it,
No straw will throw it to the ground,
For it buys hearts that will embrace it,
To crawl inside them, fully bound.

Up there, upon the high stair’s tracing,
The ruler turns into a beast,
Just like a lion, a bone embracing,
Or thief who smells a profit’s feast.

And this true picture, uninvited,
Turns into grief and deep regret,
When, with the ballot now ignited,
The nation makes its costly bet…

And drawing lines when all is over,
It understands within its hell,
That only God, in Heaven’s clover,
Is Faithful, True, and Holy as well.

A MYTH FROM ANCIENT TIMES

By Yasen Vedrin
(The Bulgarian Chronicles -
Chronicles of the Transition)

Within a miserable, minor state,
With commoners so broken by their grief,
There lived a king, a leech-like soul of late,
Upon their wounded backs, with no relief.

From dawn to dark, in blood-soaked, cruel predation —
The royal lifetime dragged its heavy track.
He turned his palace rooms to degradation,
Playing his cards and poker in the black.

He wagered grandly mid the players' betting.
On bound stakes — with liters of fresh blood.
The greedy vultures round him kept resetting,
But he would beat them, standing in the mud.

The king remained alone. With no rival's face.
He even carved upon his golden seat:
"What Dante was to Florence and its race,
And Shakespeare to the misty Albion's street,

That’s who I am among the finest!" "Cheers!
From this red blood my stature has grown high!
The fools may call me leech through all these years,
Yet it’s as God that I should pass them by.

But how did I end up with such anemia,
With pale and hungry crowds that stare at me?
They shout: 'We do not want your academy!
How can we walk bloodless and still be free?'

Is it for me to answer angry calling
From little folks with bad hemoglobin?
Aren't you content with charisma, so enthralling,
Of your supreme and master-sovereign?"

"Live with your faith! With ideals in your spirit!
The soul requires no goods, no cash today!
In submission, mind your rags and fear it,
For the king knows how to make you obey..."

Within a miserable, minor state,
Left as a myth from times of ancient lines,
About a greedy king, a leech of fate,
Who drank the blood of enslaved tribes' designs.

But in the end, he burst from all the rotting.
The blood poured out — a dark and stagnant pool.
And clotted weeds grew tall where he was plotting,
To remind the world of this blood-drinking fool.

THE CLOCK OF THIS WORLD

By Yasen Vedrin
(Mortal Remains)

The clock of this blind world is ticking fast.
Its spring is almost fully unwound now.
No power given to the dark can last,
Or turn the hands forever with a bow.

A moment comes when time itself will end
Exactly at the ordered, sacred date,
The scream of startled corpses will ascend
To herald all the judgments of God's fate.

The glittering grand palaces will fade.
The pompous elite will shiver in surprise.
Their sin will seek for advocates and aid,
But no one will forgive them or their lies.

The cheap and dirty glory of the thief
Will turn into a filthy, ragged space,
When the Grand Judge demands, in their belief,
What goods they stole from paupers in disgrace.

In nightmares, like a fate that cannot bend,
A retribution over Evil will strike,
Because the hell takes its own in the end,
While it screams out in horror, ghost-like…

The clock of this blind world is ticking fast.
Its hands are crawling closer to midnight.
The earth will wait for justice at the last,
With chasms between luxury and plight.

And may this Moment, this fateful earthquake,
Descend upon my spirit soon to heal —
For guiltless in God, yet guilty for world’s sake,
Living almost like on a Cross, I feel…

LIFE IS A CHOICE!

By Yasen Vedrin
(Mortal Remains)

Life is a choice, and everyone chooses
Whom to believe in, and whose steps to trace.
We live but once, and once a soul loses,
And faith in its battles bleeds in this space.

Within the eternal, swift rush of the hour,
The heart drifts away with its beats and its strain.
To sigh from a call, to catch breath and power,
Preserving its target and hot fiery flame.

Life is a choice. And with it, fate traces
A portrait so true for the Faithful to claim —
A crown of sharp thorns that pierces and paces,
A chalice of wine with the Spirit and Name.

Traces left high on the steep, rugged highway,
Lit by the generous rays of the Skies,
And sorrows with roots from twenty-century's byway,
Marking the cheekbones and wide-awake eyes.

Life is the choice that happens to settle
Only but once, through the spirit or flesh.
It either breaks loose, or catches its metal,
But always arrives at the final edge, fresh…

So let the wise man make choices with care.
For heavy and light, a price must be paid…
The guilt looking up is washed by Blood there,
The guilt looking down… remains guilt unswayed!

THE UNFULFILLED SEED

By Yasen Vedrin
(Mortal Remains)

The unfulfilled seed aches inside,
After the bright and pouring rain.
The sower takes a breath, to stride,
And sows a Call across the plain.

And with full Faith he hopes anew,
That it will sprout both here and there,
So that within hard soil, true,
The grain will find a spark to share.

The time of grace flows, running fast,
From two pierced hands, wounded and deep,
But does it yield a hundredfold at last —
The heart that sunlit glances keep?

What kind of sorrow brings it fear?
What weed torments it with its guile,
If it cannot give back, sincere,
The Heavenly Gift, with even a smile?

The sower skips each mournful plea,
With many seeds upon the track,
For it is only God, we see,
Who bears human guilt upon His back.

And he will go on sowing wide
His Covenant around the land,
Even if freezing cold outside
Laps selfish human earth and sand.

The moment comes when from his sack
The final seed he will bestow,
And beaten by his fateful track,
In deep humility, kneel low.

He sowed unutterable words, defined
By the Comforter, pure and Blest,
But stumbled into winters blind,
And human chill struck down his chest.

What of it? He at least has tried,
His holy duty didn't freeze,
But with a Faith, open and wide,
He sought to rescue souls with ease.

An unfulfilled, lone seed is left
To ache within the sower’s care,
And today's cruel time, bereft,
Is like Golgotha everywhere…

COMFORT FOR THE OUTSIDER

By Yasen Vedrin
(Mortal Remains)

Do not lament, when failing to succeed,
You find yourself within this gloomy space.
The throne of winners is corrupt, indeed,
Its price is like a stench of dark disgrace.

Only the hunchbacks rule the earth tonight,
With glances fixed upon their paradise.
After their heavy bows to snake in sight,
They curl up tight, forever paid by vice.

No one lifts up their head to God above,
By earthly treasures frozen and confined,
And everyone drags chains, devoid of love,
In which their captived spirit stays resigned.

And who is then the one we should deplore,
When viewed beyond the final, silent gate?
The purchased glory fades forevermore,
With cunning conscience kept for judgment's fate.

So powerful are the iron bars that bind
The fallen souls the prince of darkness holds,
That open fields make paupers glad to find
The freedom from the cash and power molds.

To be an outsider just means, indeed,
That you already stand on other tracks,
And you have no misfortunes left to bleed
From bowing down to Satan on your backs.

For the prince gives, but later takes it back…
Deceived — the souls become his final part
In deep abysses, invisible and black
For those who lived with sin inside their heart.

For this blind world condemns to banishment
The ones over whom it has no power or reign…
While others — with a Judas noose intent —
Are harvest for the ultimate villain's gain.

LOVE SEES NO GUILT, IN ALL BELIEVING

By Yasen Vedrin
(Mortal Remains)

Love sees no guilt, in all believing.
So innocent. Bright-trusting, whole.
Yet down below, instead of drinking
The sweetest nectar, grief fills its soul.

The hands prepared for warm embraces,
Are bitten by hyenas’ spite.
While audience turns back their faces,
And lock cold doors into the night.

The good man from naivety suffers,
By hypocrites tripped on his way.
Expecting love for what he offers —
With heaps of hate he’s paid today.

And somehow, with an ancient lesson,
He understands, as time goes by,
If faith is what he puts his stress on,
He must look closer with his eye…

For he would quickly gather many,
When stretching palms with gifts to share.
But then drinks wormwood, with no penny,
Wounded by blind thoughts everywhere.

Why, Love, are you so unprotected,
Like silk lace, fragile to the touch?
You give yourself to be perfected,
Before you have received so much…

And if a plea from you arises,
By muddy splashes it’s denied,
Even if with the shirt he prizes
The lover clothes the world outside…

You are a price, for which, in sorrow,
The saint pays for the Heavens high.
To be a pearl in swamp tomorrow,
Or a lone fig tree in fields nearby.

To be a bread, till last crumb eaten,
And wine, to very final drop.
Passing a test, severe and beaten,
Through Holy Heavenly sieve to stop.

And there, before the Lord’s own Altar,
Reflected in live words to weave…
Love sees no guilt, and will not falter.
So innocent. Bright-trusting, to believe.

THE MOVIE HAS BEEN WATCHED BEFORE…

By Yasen Vedrin
(Mortal Remains)

The movie has been watched before,
To the very last blink of our space.
So, hold on to your hope and ignore
The sorrow that weighs on your face.

On the bright, wise and heavenly screen
See yourself in the times that have passed.
For when nailed to the Cross you are seen —
God will come for your spirit at last.

And out there, it will no longer sting,
Nor the crown of sharp thorns will oppress…
Lift your eyes to the Father and King —
Eternity waits on the threshold to bless.

The movie has been watched before.
There is nothing brand new under sun.
But when late drops of rain stop to pour,
This cruel, heavy drama is done.

To yourself you will say: "I survived
Through the fears of this terrible age.
In the palm of the Lord I was held,
To discover His Love on the stage.

With sufferings, the Chalice I drained,
And in dreams tasted comfort so deep.
In His Covenant Eternal I stayed,
My Heavenly garment to keep."

The movie is ending… I hope I am bound!
I pray that in Him I will wake!
By the Call of Christ captured and found —
The Heavenly gates I will take…

COMFORT FOR THE STRANGER

By Yasen Vedrin
(Mortal Remains)

“I am a stranger in the earth…” (Psalm 119:19)

When you are just a stranger in the earth,
And like a foe, the world casts you aside,
A Holy hope remains your only worth —
That Your true Home awaits across the tide.

That there, all painful wounds will deeply heal,
And no more evil will oppress the soul,
Instead of ravens, crows, and what they feel,
A White Dove will fly high, to make you whole.

The massive, heavy weariness compiles,
Just like a mountain, impossible to bear,
Everywhere among the human files
To meet the queen of evil and despair.

And king of sin among the lost to roam,
With crowns from Sodom, rebel and unkept,
While faith, so hardened in its worldly home,
Grieves for the Heaven where it hasn't slept.

Deep down inside the chalice, dark and plain,
The poison starts to pour, a heavy flood,
The evil stirs it with a sharp clawed chain,
To throw you down and freeze your human blood…

But this blind world is not your homeland space,
And flesh is not where final fates arise.
A moment comes for spirit’s resting place
Near the most wonderful and Holy Light of skies.

And up above, the battle ends its art,
What’s written inside you will take its throne,
For when Eternity receives the stranger's heart,
The pain will stop, and leave the soul alone…

O, LUCKY MAN!

By Yasen Vedrin
(Mortal Remains)

To the lucky I say: Be content,
But remember this Truth, so unseen!
Every spirit left traces and went,
So that hearts could be captured between.

A rich man will tell you: "I lived,
And my blessings were wonderful, bright!
No sin in my soul was perceived,
Nor a shadow of Horned One in sight..."

O, you vain and you weak advocate
Of the deeds that the Lord hates to find!
Satan’s hidden! He watches, in wait,
While temptations are piled up ahead, blind!

Only one who is warmed by the sun,
Casts a shadow when stopping the rays...
But the fool, by his self-greed undone,
Seems alive, yet he dies in his ways.

It’s not scary, when broken and down,
To be tortured by dramas so old.
"Ah, what happens when I am not around,
There, out there, when my body grows cold?

Which spirit will reach out a hand,
To reclaim a captured heart’s space?
Was I, God, by Your river and land?
Did I sow Your own Seed in its place?

Did You mark Your traces in me,
Or the dark one left his first sign?
Who reigns in my chest, to be free,
And won't leave this spirit of mine?"

O, lucky man! Look at the word!
Rarely spoken by spirit or mouth!
The most beautiful prestige inferred
Is to love Christ with all of your youth.

And accumulating dreams for His part,
With full Faith to lay down your own key,
Only then will he whisper with heart:
"In me, God, Your own traces You'll see!"

THE CALL OF FAITH

By Yasen Vedrin
(The Copper Bowl)

Come down from above, Dear Lord!
In a poor man's clothes arrive!
See then who with one accord
In Your holy steps will strive!

Who will warm the pauper’s heart
With a shirt, a coin, or bread,
And with timid love, apart,
Call himself Your slave instead!

Look, Most Holy Judge and Guide,
How the wolves the pastures keep,
And with cursed feet, in pride,
Muddy waters for the sheep.

Greedy men before You pray,
Yet Mammon is in their mind.
How they twist false hands today
For the hollow groans they find?

Where is Your poor widow now
With her final mites, so small?
Did she vanish from the plow
Like a stray dog chased by all?

Come down, Eternal God, to stay!
Bring Your Justice from above!
For in heartless years today,
Evil crushed the souls we love.

Kindness is a wanderer now,
Finding every door is closed.
For Your Comfort, with a bow,
Mournful faith its prayer composed.

Hear it, God of Mercy, hear!
Let Christ now return again!
And save hearts, in Spirit dear,
From all malice, grief, and pain.

THE BLIND MAN'S PRAYER

By Yasen Vedrin
(The Copper Bowl)

Blind to malice and to human plight,
Blind to furies, spits, and insults cast,
Tapping with my cane into the night,
With timid steps I venture out at last.

All my life a prayer I have cleared,
Hoping God would somehow find a way —
With pure faith to make my eyelids healed,
Turning into miracles my clay.

To open eyes and see the world arise.
The sun, the heaven, and the stars above.
To feel the grace that in the spirit lies,
And warm my chest with fire and with love.

Perhaps from deep within all human eyes,
Kindness always glances, soft and clear.
And from their depths, bright sunbeams always rise,
While man holds another human dear.

Lord, will You arrive? Please let me know!
In Your sweet mercy heal my broken sight!
This blindness is a heavy weight and woe,
And for You, the miracle is light!

But if, healed in Siloam, I should see,
Won't my spirit suffer even more?
"O, blind man! Do not grieve or bow your knee!
Your blindness is a gift, a prize in store!"

SEEK FOR THE LIVING SAINT!

By Yasen Vedrin
(The Copper Bowl)

“My little children, let us not love in word,
neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth...”
(1 John 3:18)

If poverty should hunt you down,
With overflowing grief, like streams,
Seek for the living saint around,
To hold your hand and build your dreams...

For with no candle, with no light,
And even with no prayerful plea,
With his two glowing eyes and bright,
He would give Love to make you free.

He’d strip away his only shirt
To warm a freezing back with flame,
For Christ Himself steps through the dirt,
To build a Temple in his name.

He’d open up his purse with grace,
And with his very final cent,
He would embrace the poor man’s space
With comfort that the Heavens sent.

He’d break his final piece of bread —
To put a Strength in those who fail,
And it stays true, whatever’s said,
When God makes joyful hearts prevail.

An angel for our daily need,
With fiery wings spread wide above.
With him — you are embraced, indeed,
Not just in words, but deeds of Love...

THE GOOD MAN

By Yasen Vedrin
(The Copper Bowl)

The good man, I tell you, is like a raindrop.
He will blend with the rest in a stream.
With a warm coat to share, and a bite not to stop,
To be God’s helping hand in a dream.

The good man, I tell you, has no gold in the bank.
No chauffeur drives his car down the line.
But within his own life, not of wealthiest rank,
Sunlit glances from his eyes always shine.

The good man, I tell you, can never be broken.
A tough branch is his spirit for years.
If he trusts an idea, by deeds it is spoken.
And succeeds... the good man through his tears.

The good man, I tell you, when giving, won’t lose.
By self-interest he’s never restrained.
In deep mercy for life, it is love he will choose,
With no tax for the deeds he sustained.

The good man, I tell you, is sowing his seeds.
He won't turn his eyes back to the past.
If a drop is still missing to answer our needs —
He will pour it, and streams will flow fast...

The good man, I tell you, needs no power or might.
He is power himself. Impulse, alive.
Even if his own fate should grow dark as the night —
In his faith he will happily thrive.

The good man, I tell you, inside me rejoices.
And awakes within you too, right now?
For the brightest of meanings, in all human voices,
Is to stop every pain with a bow.

THE RETURNEE

By Yasen Vedrin
(Pearl Seeker)

I do not fear to fade away alone
Amidst the snowdrifts of a winter’s night.
For fate is beautiful, in ways its own,
Even beyond the final line in sight.

And even if unjust it may appear,
It follows its own providential theme.
Life comes, and then it leaves this earthly sphere,
And every breath is but a drop in stream.

One person dies, another comes to birth.
The torch is passed by bloodlines. With Olympus.
And laurel? It is not chosen on this earth,
But sits like halos on the heads that window us.

If I can just ignite a tiny spark,
The fire will continue when I’m gone.
Why should I mourn my ending in the dark,
Or let unfulfilled yearnings weigh me down?

How long does a footprint left behind
Tremble upon the waves before it dies?
Forgot, it vanishes into the blind
Oblivion where the water columns rise.

And only he who seeks will ever find
The treasure that another gave away —
Even if lost chimeras of the mind,
In which he lived or didn't yesterday...

The world is not the ultimate, sole cause
Of all the things that happened to occur.
Before I leave it, bound by nature's laws,
I want no things for me, I do aver.

For when I cross that final, silent sill —
I am a returnee out there, no less?
Only then, let my weeping eyes fulfill
The grief that can no longer hurt or press...

A CAUSE

By Yasen Vedrin
(Pearl Seeker)

I do not look for proofs in theorems' design,
I have no scheduled hour to see a shrink.
The friendships that are fake dissolve in time,
With no regret or worry on the brink.

I do not want with useless, blind illusions
To fill up every corner of my space.
If I should trip — I bleed from cold contusions,
But I am always there, in time and place.

With that so necessary, calm apathy,
I skip past every card that Vanity deals.
I don't debate with the devil's attorney,
I trust the deeds before the words he feels.

And somehow, as a stoic by definition,
Stretched out from Marcus Aurelius to Seneca's line,
I am not tortured by this long transition
Along this unending, deep path of mine.

I chose it to be far from worldly glory.
Even the laurel branches dry and fade.
The crooked and the straight share the same story,
When scratching for a rusted crown self-made.

The meaningful — by many still undetected —
I will preserve for travelers behind.
To be a giver of virtues, well-protected —
What higher cause could my own ego find?

THE CLASSICS WITH QUILLS

By Yasen Vedrin
(Pearl Seeker)

High up above — where birds alone are soaring —
I love to drift, on widespread wings sustained.
To lead a talk with classics, while exploring
The timeless traces that in me remained.

There Dostoevsky with his Karamazovs I will meet,
And Gogol with his dead souls I will find.
They humble down my ego at Christ's feet,
When heavy grief leaves all my joy behind.

Tolstoy will wrap me in Resurrection's light,
And Pushkin with Onegin will shine clear.
While down below — with sword and fire bright —
The world will hiss with bitter rage and fear.

With Chekhov’s prose my loneliness I’ll heal,
Yesenin will become my haven white.
And Lermontov’s young passion I will feel,
Blending my sorrow with a pure delight.

And this vast Russia — grand, with leaves unspun,
With its white birches, lakes of crystal gleam —
When I would ask it: "What is Truth, under the sun?" —
I look to classics with their quills supreme...

MY FRIEND!

By Yasen Vedrin
(Pearl Seeker)

My friend! My D’Artagnan, so true and fast!
If I were Dumas, I would write your glory.
Our life is a fateful novel till the last,
And everyone breathes in to read its story.

I will not look for faith in Richelieu.
The cunning cardinal I fully banish.
Instead of silk-clad power, false and new,
You are enough for muddy paths to vanish.

With just a sword — for honor's sake alone!
With just an oath — for glory, pure and high!
A support yesterday, today a stone —
The friend remains forever, standing by!

Now one for all! And all for one, indeed!
No other motto could my soul desire!
Even with a cup of wormwood in my need,
To drink a loyal toast, fate tuned my lyre.

My friend! My D’Artagnan, so dear to me!
I hope to be your Athos in this space!
While Porthos and Aramis, wild and free,
With yearning share my high and heavenly grace!

CITY LIGHTS

By Yasen Vedrin
(Freezing Point)

She will look with her eyes full of light
At the world, so unfamiliar, apart.
And you — keep your silence in night,
That no one can love your own heart.

If you just reach your hand to extend —
How can one lonely heart be achieved?
Will the small candlelight in the end
Be in bright neon flashes perceived?

Will the delicate flower smell sweet,
If it’s shaken, with no one to call?
Doesn't chill make our feelings retreat,
When our yearning stays hidden from all?

Smile now with your sorrow concealed,
Like a knight with his armor in pieces.
Seeking joy — in this hour, on this field —
You are chasing a memory that ceases...

She will look with her eyes full of light.
Love will find her in every heartbeat.
Let no grief in your eyes come to sight,
Even if the whole world fades in defeat.

VANITY FAIR

By Yasen Vedrin
(Freezing Point)

To a ball I was asked by old Vanity:
"Hey, you cheerful, bright charmer! Come near!
Come and dance with the elite of humanity,
With no weight of human sorrow or fear!

Look, the cognac is festively gleaming
In this glass made of delicate crystal...
How many others are waiting and dreaming
For my invitation to cross this threshold...

I chose you! For your mind is so splendid!
With your lyre, you write with such ease!
On the crest of the wave, Yasen, blended,
This prestige will be yours, if you please.

Here a courtly, grand lady is glancing,
There a famous professor observes.
Drink the cognac, while we are advancing —
Blessed poet with Vanity's nerves...

I am tired of worldly, prose thinking.
With your wonderful verses, praise me today!
Give the most fiery rose without blinking
To this brothel of mine, on display!

Courtesan next to virgin patrician —
No plot could be more captivating.
Look at me with deep eyes, your ambition!
Possess me in rhymes, escalating!..."

I was cast out... I refused to obey.
Vanity traded me for a snob's name.
And I went to the slush, far away —
Where sadness rings out just the same.

A TALK WITH VALJEAN

By Yasen Vedrin
(Freezing Point)

Invented by Hugo’s immortal pen,
Within a story, holy and sublime,
I see you in your final weight again,
While ice has locked the earth in frozen time.

I am no radical of extreme thought,
Yet full of pure illusions, brotherhood.
By day I trudge through sticky mud, distraught,
Of mutiny, shame, sins against the good.

Your spirit comes to visit my own heart,
Your deep and harmless essence, so profound.
To stay deaf in the gale, to do my part,
Against the snakelike whispers spinning round.

Above a cup of soup with some gray wretch,
To read Christ’s holy words and contemplate.
To meet Gavroche before my door, and stretch
The Love of loves to shield him from his fate.

To leave a mark behind. A trace, a sign.
In hearts and minds. In palms and eyes awake.
So that the evil falls in floods, divine,
With iron handcuffs locked for his own sake.

And this, my friend Valjean, is where I stand,
My final, holy barricade and turn —
By evil of this world, unchecked, untamed,
Upon my fateful bonfire to burn...

WHITE BEAR

By Yasen Vedrin
(Freezing Point)

A white bear is the faith I am holding
In a world that is freezing so fast.
No future perspective unfolding,
And no calendars turned to the last.

They keep telling me: "Think more globally!"
And they push all their charts in my face.
"Warmth is coming, it's real and noticed!"
As the ice melts away from its place.

But the fears in my heart that are shrinking
Are prepared with another scale to measure.
For by day, when at souls I am looking,
I see shivering hearts lose their treasure.

There is no sign of mercy or healing,
And the time is so blank, so colder.
Under clothes, everyone is concealing
What is holy, and personal, and bolder.

Ice is drifting and crawling, untamed,
A sharp iceberg is threatening in white.
Even if like Titanic my heart had been named —
It would perish and break in the fight.

Maybe ancient and deep intuition
Keeps my soul in a shield, unrevealed.
A white bear is my faith and condition
In a world that is freezing and chilled.

A POTION OF SIGHS

By Yasen Vedrin
(A Potion of Sighs)

Upon the warm stove of my lifetime and fate,
A kettle of bitter herbs simmers and sighs.
I gathered the weeds when the starlight was late,
And mixed them with faith and with wisdom likewise.

At first, I left footprints. I pressed with my heel.
In these little hollows I wept, all alone.
A tear in each space — for pure dreams I could feel,
And grief for the colorless life I had known.

From within my own heart, seeds for herbs I then chose.
Each seed filled with yearning, anxiety, care.
Deep down in the soil, the seeds I enclosed,
And offered to God a hot, passionate prayer.

Time passed. Many summers extinguished their light.
My hair started changing its shades and its gleams.
Like a sad, ancient fated queen, youth took its flight.
It wept right beside me. It packed up my dreams.

And then I rushed up the steep slope in a race
To find all the footprints I left long ago.
Those herbs that were planted with moans in that place.
Those sighs that were bitter, with sadness and woe.

They had sprouted and grown. They had bloomed in the air.
Not a single wild herb, but a garden, whole-grown.
There is tea for the soul of the poet so rare,
Who passed through this life quite ingloriously, alone.

So I sit here in silence. I stretch out my hands
And warm myself up with live memories’ trace.
I drink from the potion. On my palate expands
The glow of sad sighs, bitter-tasting with grace.

FAREWELL

By Yasen Vedrin
(A Potion of Sighs)

Stripped of my leaves, in dark forebodings grieving,
From truths and worries that came true, so tired.
A late, cold autumn with its gusts is weaving
A final shrift for me, by winds inspired.

“I’m leaving now. The winter comes behind me.
I shook your branches in my freezing rain.
But life will go on long, as time outlined thee,
So hold your faith deep down through all the pain.

The leaves grow green, then wither and decay.
So fragile — like words caught in cycles’ spin.
And feelings slow down, panting on the way,
Within this seasonal world you wander in.

I’m leaving now. Let me embrace you tight,
For frost will cover you with white tomorrow.
But I will return, out of the winter's night,
And all between us shall resume past sorrow...”

My very final leaf was torn away.
It tried to fly, but failed and met the ground.
And I, who sent my autumn on its way,
Curled by the root to sleep in peace profound.

AUTUMN WISDOM

By Yasen Vedrin
(A Potion of Sighs)

My final autumn strikes me with its breeze
And shakes the yellow leaves into the air.
With secret leaven, kneaded with much ease
Inside my heart, to follow truth I dare.

It always wakes exactly at the stage
When loops and cycles near their final end,
And when the artist needs, at such an age,
To feel rich in the heights, as realms ascend.

Attempting at the sunset to stay warm,
Old men step forth into the gloomy phase.
They tap their canes in silence through the storm,
Forgetting their most mournful groan and days.

The leaves that lost the fight with falling down,
Have stripped away their summer shades of green,
And sooner, later, every leaf must drown
In withered foliage of this transient scene.

What could sustain their warmth if they must die?
Does their green yearning still remain behind?
Do precious, weary souls rise up and fly,
To break the chains that old age cast and bind?

No! That is not what’s written for us all!
For even in the autumn, spring can thrive!
But pine-needles they must be through the fall,
Not heavy oak leaves struggling to survive…

My final autumn strikes with heavy hand.
I shrink. A fading leaf I will not be!
A stubborn needle, small upon the land,
Ready to live two centuries, wild and free…

To still remain so radiant, fresh, and green,
And to endow everyone with breath —
This is my shared, wise truth, profound, serene,
For travelers to the Life that knows no death.

I AUTUMN...

By Yasen Vedrin
(A Potion of Sighs)

I autumn... Don't ask me for answers or why...
I am seasonally bound, it appears.
And a rainbow of leaf-fall is filling my eye,
And its magic is yours through the years.

I autumn... Subjected to rains of old traces,
Of days gone by, not to forget.
And a drizzling sky recites rhymes in my spaces
Of how green turns to yellow and wet.

I autumn... And within its wise, cyclical spinning,
The world covers me with its shade.
I am tired of youth in my dreams from beginning.
Perhaps old age is happily made.

I autumn... A silver bloom chases my track
From a radiant summer, now cold.
Embrace me! For life is a yearning turned back —
To transform all our silver to gold.

I autumn... Don't ask me for answers or why...
A gilded Yesenin, perhaps, in my soul...
And a barely perceived, subtle grief wanders by,
Making senses shed tears for the whole.

MY WIND!

By Yasen Vedrin
(A Potion of Sighs)

The morning caresses me, blue-eyed.
The autumn is whispering, pale-faced.
The long-sleeping yearnings inside
Awake to the scent leaves have placed.

All night through the window, flung wide,
The cool wind has frolicked and played.
With palettes snatched down from the sky,
Its art on my floor it has laid.

A golden-bright autumn design.
How dare I to step? I must fly...
A carpet of innocence fallen, divine.
Dear God! Is it real to the eye?

Each leaf is a magical sign,
Turned gold in the delicate sheet.
As if a new childhood is mine —
Awake by a tree, fresh and sweet.

As if my dear mother is near,
A quince in my hand she has placed.
The sunbeams are laughing and clear,
Like fish in a river enchased...

My wind! You have made me smile bright!
Now paint everything in my soul!
I’ll stay in your tenderness quiet —
Reborn with my childhood made whole.

Fly deep in my spirit, fly high —
Like dreams under skies old and vast.
See tears in my hand, clear and dry?
They’re dew from my eyes of the past...

Please, keep painting, do not depart,
With yellows of autumn embrace.
My reward is a verse from the heart
To kiss your invisible face...

TURNED PAGES

By Yasen Vedrin
(Fireflies in the Palm)

We turned all the pages that stood as our last.
We were folded by cold and by sharp loneliness.
For its shadows we were but two strangers who passed,
Lost completely in night’s heavy gloom and distress...

We dreamed of each other, tied fast in our fates.
We painted each other in watercolor, bright.
Satiated never, we drank of those traits.
We wandered through limits, seeking bounds in the night.

We revealed all ourselves in sad truths that were cast.
We shared all our secrets aloud from the heart.
We smiled, internally cleansed at the last.
We opened our doorways for us from the start.

We longed for each other in feverish craze.
We kissed one another in lines soft and clear.
We grew jealous, suffering from words in a daze.
We wounded ourselves out of sad, heavy fear.

We turned all the pages that stood as our last.
We closed ourselves down without being at all...
Unwalked boundaries remained from the days of the past,
And a grief that will bring a sharp pain like a wall...

UNREACHABLE

By Yasen Vedrin
(Fireflies in the Palm)

Through some stubborn and persistent hope inside,
The kind of which is never found in me,
I discover you, though you remain and hide,
I envision you, though blinded I may be.

I touch your hand, although I am so far.
I fold you inside moments left alone.
A verse is lit, where all my heartbeats are,
Ready from ashes to build dreams unknown.

At least through them you’re living and you stay.
Accessible in pulse. Caressed in sleep.
Though with no ray or prospect on the way.
Although I am with you. And yet can't keep.

Sometimes even a mere image or view
Sculptures from marble beauty and its trace.
The statue stays like calls, forever true,
Born in a white-stone mouth inside this place.

They do not breathe, yet they are burning hot.
They say no words, and yet the verses turn.
I feel you. But you feel me not on spot.
I paint you with charcoal and sparks that burn.

I reach you, still unreachable and far.
I chase your soul, just like a star ahead.
Although I have you not, you are my star.
Traceless you are, but in me traces tread.

And in this line my soul I will disclose,
Even if left unread by your own breath.
I stay a breeze that loves the storm it knows,
A valley, by a mountain peak faced with death.

THE UGLY DUCKLING

By Yasen Vedrin
(Fireflies in the Palm)

Tonight I invite you to visit my space.
I’m pouring some wine. The candle flames light.
For things that are simple, with mystical grace –
I warm frozen dreams in the dark of the night.

I know that the doorway will not creak or slide,
Nor will any doorbell startle me blue.
You’ll come, but somehow from heaven outside –
Like a fairy from palaces, shining and true.

Like a sharp, painful ache of my madness inside,
Like a soft, gentle whisper of my crying tone,
Like a moment of hard-suffered wonder and guide,
That you fall in love with the look left alone.

You will come, and I will be tender and clear –
Revealing each thought and emotion within.
That beautiful swan, snowy-white and so dear,
Who once an ugly duckling had been.

That ultimate meaning that all things so bright
Require their time for a blooming address...
I drink of this wine, bitter-sweet in the night.
I wait for you, frozen in icy distress!

You do not come, even from heavens above!
No fairy from palaces shines through the shade!
And the cold glass of windows, forgotten by love,
Grows foggy from snow-powder falling displayed.

Tonight I invite you to visit my space...
An empty, cold glass. The candle burns low.
An ugly duckling with questions to face,
And an unfulfilled wonder in night’s heavy glow…

A SPECK WITHIN THE EYE

By Yasen Vedrin
(Fireflies in the Palm)

If only this bright day could be a charm
And miracles would happen with no boundaries,
I would shrink down at once, safe from all harm –
Into the silken space your hair surrounds.

Bound tightly with a single hair around my waist,
I would descend down to your eyes so kind.
And after that I’d look, but late in haste, –
At what you hid from me within your mind.

You speak about a speck within your eye...
But tell me, is there truly such a part?
Should I become a Gulliver, to try,
Because a tear of secrets weights your heart?

That secret, filled with full impossibility,
In which even a single touch brings pain.
When everything grows complex with fragility,
And there's no meaning in the words "if" or "again".

That secret – meaning, all the kindness told,
Which never opens love or unlocks the gate.
Which passes by, untoward and so cold,
With all the craved-for things denied by fate...

I understand! We drift apart, we two!
A tiny speck within the eye divides.
And yet the day could be a magic view,
Where rains of miracles pour down from all the sides!

A LACE OF FULFILLED DREAMS

By Yasen Vedrin
(The Vine of Engadi)

“Thy lips are like a thread of scarlet,
and thy speech is comely...”
(Song of Solomon 4:3)

When hearing how your voice begins to weave
The delicate, fine lace of dreams made true,
My heart grows quiet, waiting for relief,
Not asking if wingless it can fly to you.

An unearthly dream uplifts it to the skies,
While in your lips the wind begins to spin.
You fill me up, yet more I want to rise.
I do not ask – when or where we shall begin...

Among the evening clouds within the setting light,
Your waiting voice will fall into a rest,
And feeling, like a burning fire in the night,
Will weave us in one lace upon your chest.

CAPTIVATE ME, O LOVE!

By Yasen Vedrin
(The Vine of Engadi)

“Turn away thine eyes from me,
for they have overcome me...”
(Song of Solomon 6:5)

In the snow-white-dyed ropes o’er an abyss,
My long gaze is transfixed on your face.
If I look to the side – I will vanish,
Like a smoke scattered out with no trace.

Let me pass into you, drawn and driven.
Past your eyes. In the wild captive storm.
Where alone in its beauty is given
The bright spring of green longing so warm.

Where the birds in their flight keep arriving,
And the world like a harp starts to ring...
Having conquered me, saving and striving –
Captivate me, O love, like a king...

LET THERE BE DOVES UPON YOUR FAIRY FACE

By Yasen Vedrin
(The Vine of Engadi)

“Behold, thou art fair, my love; behold,
thou art fair; thou hast doves' eyes...”
(Song of Solomon 1:15)

I would not find a color in the bow
To capture in a stroke your shining face.
Through your sweet eyes, where beautiful things grow,
The doves will make a white and boundless space.

The wondrous poetry will softly coo.
A heavenly ray upon your lids will bide.
And in your gaze a break will shine for you,
Prepared to gather all my calls inside.

And in the flash, when visible and clear
You capture me, a whisper I will trace:
Let there be doves, so innocent and dear,
And let me fly with them in happy grace.

THE TENDERNESS WITH FLOWING MANES

By Yasen Vedrin
(The Vine of Engadi)

“I have compared thee, O my love,
to a company of horses in Pharaoh's chariots...”
(Song of Solomon 1:9)

A craved-for sound of clicking horseshoes’ stride.
Bright fairy horses fly into the sky.
My lonely voice just asked into the tide:
“Do you love me? Even a little, try...”

And as if tenderness, with flowing manes,
Gathered wild winds throughout its racing flight.
While our emotions – playful in our veins –
Shone with the sunrise of a morning bright.

Our hearts were sparking from the horseshoes' beat.
And that loud thud – that all the world must throb,
When with our lips, prepared the flash to meet,
Within a single kiss my soul you rob.

WHY DO I REMEMBER YOU?

By Yasen Vedrin
(Unfaded Memories)

Why does my heaven remember you this way?
You, who gave sunrises to the sunsets’ light.
Were you a crimson rose with drops of spray,
Or just a soul, with tears unconcealed from sight?

Why does the marble inside me hold your trace?
Through rough, coarse touch – so tender and so white.
Will the sharp chisel of unshared desire's space
Sculpture your form just for a parting night?

Why does my sacred dome remember you inside –
Beyond the altar your image to torment?
Are you a cross of love, unknown and wide,
Ready to crucify me when the veil is rent...

Why do I remember you – a craved-for spring,
Jealously guarded in late jugs of my own?
A beautiful love is a last dreaming thing.
Even if I forget you – it remembers you alone.

A CANVAS OF REMEMBRANCE

By Yasen Vedrin
(Unfaded Memories)

I would not hold the world inside my chest.
A single call from you suffices there.
And that cold snow upon my hair compressed
Will melt into a skylark's wings in air.

And both our palms will turn to nests again,
Where breath will gently spread our dreams of grace –
Those lucid, tiny drops of summer rain,
Longed for from borders whispered in this place.

The moment will be only you and me –
For time itself, within our eyes confined.
For just a day, from its rotation free,
The harsh, relentless spindle will unwind.

To recall each other – in meaning and in trace.
And in the tone of an unfinished song.
To watch how beautiful past days of grace
Return to senses where they both belong.

Beside my shoulder gently rest your head –
Our moment will create eternity, so true,
Since threads of purest blue have long been spread
Into a canvas of remembrance spun for you...

PASTORAL

By Yasen Vedrin
(Unfaded Memories)

I can become a soft rug for your feet
With gentle scent that clover fields impart.
An evening longing we can share and meet –
A wonder underneath the vines, apart.

I can become a warmth for you tonight –
A burning fire, built close beside the wall.
While the pale moon whispers with its light
Through leaves of plane trees rising grand and tall.

I can become a cricket in the land.
A little firefly on your palm to gleam.
A boy and girl, in love and hand in hand,
Bathing at night into the flowing stream.

I can become eternity for you,
With the warm shade of an old roofing tile.
Just grant me joy that is forever true,
And tell me not to leave you all the while...

A NECKLACE

By Yasen Vedrin
(Unfaded Memories)

My memories – like sun-drenched beads inside,
Who arranged them into a necklace clear?
Maybe my own pure hope, acting as guide,
That everything is living from yesteryear...

That blooming all across my meadows, pass
Bright dandelions in a buzzing swarm.
As if my dreams were scattered on the grass,
The trembling sign of fate, so soft and warm.

Who painted my whole world, and in what way,
With so many beautiful, bright shades?
That happiness seems like a dream to stay,
As if a wondrous fairy calls through glades.

To make the miracles come true and rise
With her magic wand. Tales whispered at dawn.
To make the dew burn with a lover's eyes...
Even inside the tears to burn along.

I feel so cold. Let me get warm inside.
The necklace burns. It trembles on my skin.
The fairy leaves. I’m speechless in the tide,
Wishing she'd whisper blessings from within.

So that the time won't backward take its flight.
So past summers return to where they start.
To untangle all memories in the night –
This necklace, love, worn deep inside my heart...

LEGEND OF THE MOONLIT PATH

By Yasen Vedrin
(A Motley Palette)

A legend whispered from a shell to me
About the moonbeams born of love and light.
A tale so innocent, so pure and free,
That I am ready to whisper it in rhyme tonight.

In ancient times, the sea was wild and grim,
With rolling waves that brought out death and fear.
Its waters could not shine, its view was dim,
And darkness swallowed all its days and cheer.

But rumors started of a magic spell.
A heavy curse that came from greed of old.
The sea would calm down, if it found to dwell
A single sign of love, more pure than gold.

Pirates and sailors didn't trust a word
Of what was whispered even by the gale,
Yet still in barrels, away from being heard,
They piled up the metal, bright and pale.

But look – upon a ship by chance delayed,
A traveler climbed, so humble, quiet, and meek.
Despaired by heavy life and choices made,
He chose an unconquered shore to look and seek.

He was not rich. He only held inside
A red notebook with verses good and grand.
A little bag across his shoulder tied,
And for the ticket – all the coins in hand.

Thus sailed the ship amidst the heavy tide,
The blowing wind had filled the canvas white.
The heavy clouds began the stars to hide,
And ocean shadows grabbed it in the night.

And look, the sea began to roar and swell.
The curse was lurking, hidden everywhere.
With heavy waves inside the rooms it fell,
And struck the helpless poet with despair.

“The life is done!” – the man had softly said –
“I found no love! Good luck was never mine!
If I am meant to drown – let waves ahead
Cover me up, I am accursed this time!”

The sailors drowned and vanished without trace,
Drunk from the heavy grog they liked to sip.
The poet sighed his final tear of grace,
And leaped into the dark waves from the ship.

A magic spell it was or just a song,
But at the bottom he beheld a maid.
An angel-face, a messenger so strong,
Deep in the cold and fearsome depths displayed.

With her own hands she lifted him above,
And looked at him with fairy, dreaming eyes.
He could not speak a single word of love,
Except to watch in silence and surprise.

His life returned, not lost into the deep.
He breathed again upon a lonely strand.
Looked at the mermaid, falling in love so deep.
Her face – a moon in darkness of the land.

He gave the book and told her, soft and low:
“My only savior, you are all I see!
The waters drowned the others long ago.
Take in return the dreams that live in me!

My heart is there, in gentle words displayed!
And every joy I didn't live to view!
I’d follow you in waters with no shade,
And in this flash, I vow myself to you!”

The ocean and its waves grew calm and still.
Amidst the clouds, the moon began to rise.
A magic beam shot down with all its will
Into the stranger’s and the woman’s eyes.

They touched their hands, so softly, on the crest,
They started walking o’er the ocean floor…
The moonlit path reminds us of the best –
A beautiful love, a miracle from before.

Come you as well into the story blue.
A poet waits for you and grieves inside.
Whispered by ancient shells, the legend's true...
Perhaps it is! Along the rising tide.

MUSIC FOR TWO

By Yasen Vedrin
(A Motley Palette)

When you whisper softly to me: Stay! –
Then everything in us will feel brand new.
The wide expanse with music then will play
With pre-classic and romantic melodies too.

The music score will take its flight with wings
And call us to the clouds that drift above.
The bow will turn into an arrow that springs.
The violin – into a heart pouring with love.

The flute’s enchanting and delightful sound
Will be a stream of water from the spout.
The piano – a soft roof-drop on the ground,
So quiet, to hear your whisper speak out.

The guitar with its gentle, ringing chime
Will quickly turn into a birdhouse, small.
To wake us from our sleep at morning time,
And shed a ray of light upon our curls and all.

It will be a wondrous, fairy moment, true,
When you whisper to me that I must remain...
Because the love is a conductor for you,
And music – always for a pair, in the rain...

HERBARIUM

By Yasen Vedrin
(A Motley Palette)

Inside my poor soul a herbarium of leaves
Reminds me of you with its colorful spaces.
The breath of the spring in your sweet smile achieves,
And you fold my heart in your summer embraces.

With small, gentle bundles of soft, glowing light,
The riddles are painted right into my keeping.
The leaves are now born. Memories of days, bright –
So endlessly tender, so fast and so fleeting.

The collection of leaves – heavy with love's art,
One after another its pages discloses.
And each recollection – like scrolls in the heart –
Into a wild fire within my eyes closes.

And how can I say that you aren't by my side,
When each single shade but completes your emotion?
If I were the Earth – by your leaves caught and tied,
I’d make a bright spring start to grow into motion...

If I were the Sky – with south winds I’d descend
To be a warm summer in palms that are slender.
And thousands of leaves once again would contend
In this fair herbarium of love, pure and tender.

My soul is completely filled up with each leaf.
A single tear gleams. No, I will not be crying...
I'm happy that even in eternity’s brief,
I’ll find you right there, if my gaze keeps on trying...

A MOTLEY PALETTE

By Yasen Vedrin
(A Motley Palette)

I grew so used to watching through your eyes –
Deep down, to where your very heart would stay.
I captured all the mornings that would rise
And caressed sunsets at the end of day.

I felt you – burning hot, and filled with rain.
I touched the atmospheres where dreams would start.
I took you – innocent, and blamed with pain.
I envisioned you – with traits, and lines apart.

I loved you – transparent, and wrapped in haze.
I warmed you up amidst the snow and gale.
I dreamed of you – in sad and happy days,
With joys and shadows of a fearful tale.

I thirsted for you – blooming, green and white.
I vowed you to my manly, secret gleam.
I shielded you from autumn’s yellow blight.
I drank you up – both sober and in dream.

You have become my motley palette, true,
Within your shades I found your form and sign.
I grew so used to looking straight at you
And turning all my thoughts into a line.

I fly with you when morning light expands,
And in the sunset fall asleep, inside.
Satiated with love... Yet through the lands
Unsatisfied I wake in you – you in my tide.
